WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples especially on face, shoulders, back, chest, neck, and upper arms. It is a condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.
Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules are a common type of acne. It commonly occurs during puberty, when the sebaceous glands activate, but it can occur at any age group.
The glands produce oil and stimulated by male hormones produced by adrenal glands in both male and females.
STATISTICS:
It is a common skin condition affecting 50million people yearly. At least 85%of people experience acne between the age of 12-30 years. It affects 3 in every 4 people of age11-30 years.
CAUSES OF ACNE:
Four main factors that cause acne:-
Excess oil production
Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
Bacteria
Excess activity of hormones
Human skin has pores that connect to oil glands under the skin. Follicles connect the glands to pores. Follicles are small sacs that produce an oily liquid called SEBUM. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the skin surface. A small hair grows from the follicle out of the skin.
Pimples grow when these follicles get blocked and oil builds up under the skin. skin cells, sebum, and hair can clump together into a plug and when this plug gets infected with the bacteria (propionibacterium acne- is the name of the bacteria), swelling results. A pimple starts when the plug begins to breakdown.
