Atherosclerosis (or arteriosclerotic vascular disease) is a condition where the arteries become narrowed and hardened due to a buildup of plaque around the artery wall. Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. They are lined by a thin layer of cells that keeps them smooth and allows blood to flow easily; this is called the endothelium. Atherosclerosis starts when the endothelium becomes damaged, allowing low-density lipoproteins (LDL – bad) cholesterol to accumulate in the artery wall.
Atherosclerosis can lead to serious problems, including heart attack, stroke, or even death. Some people who have atherosclerosis have no signs or symptoms. They may not be diagnosed until after a heart attack or stroke.
The main treatment for atherosclerosis is lifestyle changes, such as following a healthy diet, quitting smoking, and being physically active. Atherosclerosis is usually attached with old age as it is most commonly caused due to the gradual hardening of arteries with age. Atherosclerosis occurs between the age of 40 and 50, it tends to become more severe.
